2010 PlatformFive Point Plan for Growth & Prosperity in South Dundas
1. Develop community vision, strategic plan and action plan to achieve objectives.
- Grow population to support local business, create jobs and make community more appealing.
- Work co-operatively with all levels of government, departments and agencies to maximize efficient use of resources.
- Work to improve overall financial and operational controls in township office to maximize efficiency.
- Ensure community assets and infrastructure is maintained and optimized.
- Work with all levels of government to build contacts internationally.
2. Focus on controlled growth - target 2.5% growth to minimize tax increases.
- Extend trunk sewer line west from Morrisburg to Coyle Drive and north of County Rd. #2 in Iroquois planning for increased development.
- Re-zone property south of County Rd. #2 for residential development from Steward Drive to Coyle Drive.
- Re-zone property north of County Rd. #2 for commercial, logistics and high-tech industry (clean & green jobs).
- Re-zone township owned land east of Morrisburg golf course for residential development on land no longer required for sewage treatment plant.
- Re-zone land north of County Rd. #2 in Iroquois for residential development.
- Fund infrastructure investment with development fees and rationalization of township assets.
- Protect and support the agriculture-based areas of the township by focusing residential development in non-agriculture areas.
3. Update Economic Development Strategic Plan and implement action plan to achieve goals.
- Target specific industries and companies to establish facilities in South Dundas.
- Use Upper Canada Region brand to market South Dundas as a desirable location to live, work and visit emphasizing our quality of life.
- Work in partnership with adjacent communities and government agencies to optimize resources for residents and tourists.
- Support and encourage development of agro tourism opportunities to showcase area farms.
- Work cooperatively with local business groups to ensure consistent focus and direction.
- Continue to work toward developing a year round tourism industry.
4. Sports, Recreation, Culture and Education
- Improve existing trails and develop plan to extend trail systems for walking, hiking and biking throughout South Dundas including promoting more north-south ties.
- Develop plans for long-term centralized recreation facilities and consider partnership with St. Lawrence Parks or adjacent municipal governments.
- Work in partnership with private sector and local school boards to provide leading edge technology and sports facilities in our schools.
- Work in partnership with school boards and St. Lawrence Parks to explore opportunities such as developing the area as a centre of excellence for the traditional trades of Upper Canada.
- Continue to support the growth of cultural experiences in South Dundas such as the St. Lawrence Stage and Upper Canada Playhouse.
- Implement a Waterfront Plan with the recommendations that have broad community support.
5. Health & Social Services
- Continue to work cooperatively and support the medical community in their on-going efforts to attract doctors and other medical professionals to the area.
- Work with Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LIHN), Winchester District Memorial Hospital, St. Lawrence Medical Clinic and Social Services to ensure accessibility for all residents of South Dundas.
- Consider re-development of the old Morrisburg High School building if viable with possible relocation of medical clinic to first floor.
- Partner with private sector and provincial government to develop senior’s support centres and apartments in Iroquois and Morrisburg to help seniors stay in their homes and communities longer.
- Continue to lobby for more long-term care beds to address the shortage.
